They may look mottled with black brown and white or be solid black depending on the species. They range in color from black to speckled with white brown yellow and orange. The hair is organized in a way that it forms a combination of dark and light patches. They re tiny and the larvae are often hidden and protected in dark cracks crevices and out of the way sites.
